Abstract

In recent years, violence against women and its representation in the media have necessitated addressing this social issue within a broader framework. Media coverage of violence shapes public perceptions and responses. This study aims to examine how femicides perpetrated by current or former intimate partners are represented in the media, and to reveal how these killings are constructed through media discourse and reproduced within the context of gender. The study was conducted using descriptive and content analysis on 185 news reports selected according to inclusion criteria from 450 reports published on the Anıt Sayaç platform between 01.07.2024 and 01.07.2025. The research was completed in accordance with SRQR guidelines. The findings provide important insights into media representations of fatal violence against women. Descriptive analysis showed that the most frequently used word in headlines was “killed,” perpetrators were mostly spouses, firearms were the most common means, some perpetrators died by suicide, and some were described as having alcohol/substance dependence. Content analysis identified themes of jealousy and fear of loss, rejection, social media use, weaknesses in restraining/protection orders, and the presentation of female identity through guided attribution. The predominance of intimate partners as perpetrators indicates that such violence largely occurs within close relationships. It is crucial for the media to adopt a sensitive approach when reporting violence. Based on the identified themes, early intervention programs and awareness initiatives should be developed, alongside strengthened legal regulations to support prevention.
