Abstract

The digital age has expanded access to information while creating vulnerabilities in the selection, evaluation, and interpretation of knowledge. This study offers an interpretive theoretical examination of the structural distance between access to information and the capacity to process it critically through the concept of the “reasoning gap.” Drawing on digital sociology, media studies, cognitive psychology, and philosophy of knowledge, it relates fragmented attention, source criticism, verification practices, and difficulties in establishing conceptual coherence. The attention economy, social acceleration, algorithmic steering, filter bubbles, and echo chambers are discussed as mechanisms shaping this gap. The concept of “epistemic illusion” explains how intensive and fragmented content consumption may strengthen the feeling of being informed while making critical evaluation more fragile. Data on digital media use, media trust, and reading practices in Türkiye are treated as contextual indicators of the social conditions in which the reasoning gap can be examined.

Özet

Dijital çağ, bilgiye erişimi yaygınlaştırırken bilginin seçilmesi, değerlendirilmesi ve anlamlandırılması süreçlerinde yeni kırılganlıklar üretmektedir. Bu çalışma, bilgiye erişim düzeyi ile bilgiyi eleştirel biçimde işleme kapasitesi arasındaki yapısal mesafeyi “muhakeme açığı” kavramı üzerinden inceleyen yorumlayıcı bir teorik değerlendirmedir. Dijital sosyoloji, medya çalışmaları, bilişsel psikoloji ve bilgi felsefesi literatürü birlikte ele alınarak dikkat parçalanması, kaynak eleştirisi, doğrulama pratikleri ve kavramsal bütünlük kurma güçlüğü ortak bir çerçevede ilişkilendirilmektedir. Dikkat ekonomisi, toplumsal hızlanma, algoritmik yönlendirme, filtre balonları ve yankı odaları muhakeme açığını biçimlendiren başlıca mekanizmalar olarak tartışılmaktadır. Yoğun ve parçalı içerik tüketiminin bilgi sahibi olma hissini güçlendirirken eleştirel değerlendirmeyi kırılganlaştırması “epistemik yanılsama” kavramıyla açıklanmaktadır. Türkiye’ye ilişkin dijital kullanım, medya güveni ve okuma pratikleri ise kavramın tartışılabileceği toplumsal koşulları görünür kılan bağlamsal göstergeler olarak değerlendirilmektedir.
