Abstract

In this paper, I explore the relationship between religion, theology, and imperial policies in Victorian England, focusing on the theological foundations established toward the end of the century. My study offers a historical perspective on the nineteenth-century roots of contemporary British theology by demonstrating how Victorian state policies and theological developments were mutually constitutive. My central hypothesis is that Victorian theology evolved alongside the political and cultural agendas of the empire, producing a distinctive religious and theological habitus among the theologians of the period. To support this argument, I examine Anglican, Anglo-Catholic, Protestant, and Catholic communities, taking the edited volume Lux Mundi [1889] as my primary case study. Throughout my investigation, I consider the sociocultural structure and intellectual debates of the period only to the extent that they contributed to Victorian theology. I discuss the topic by adapting the concept of competition used in economics and Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus to the field of the History of Religions. Methodologically, I adopt an interdisciplinary approach, combining document analysis and hermeneutic methods, and giving equal weight to primary sources and contemporary secondary scholarship. The significance of the research is twofold: First, it clarifies the historical origins of contemporary British theology. Second, it offers a comparative perspective on church–state relations and intercommunal competition in Türkiye.
