Abstract
This article aims to discuss Molla Dâvudzâde Mustafa Nâzım Erzurûmî’s work titled Sermon for the Current Period within the framework of the theory of symbolic interactionism. In this work, written in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, the moral and spiritual difficulties of modernity and the deterioration in faith and virtue were mentioned. Drawing on the theoretical framework of George Herbert Mead and Herbert Blumer, the current study interpreted the text in question as a socially constructed symbolic space with concepts such as “modernity”, “faith”, “work”, and “community”. The analysis showed how the author, who assumed the role of a moral intermediary, sought to re-establish the collective moral order by redefining modern symbols within religious discourse. In accordance with Goffman’s theory, the text is a staging of the Ottoman society’s effort to manage its national image to both internal and external audiences, to regain lost honor and to initiate collective role transformation. He also showed how basic symbols and the collective self are sought to be changed and directed in times of moral crisis, as social order as Blumer says is sustained by people’s constant interpretation and negotiation of meanings. Examining a text from the late Ottoman period, such as Molla Dâvudzâde’s Sermon for the Current Period, in the context of symbolic interactionism can provide a new perspective on both text analysis and the mental world of Ottoman modernization. It can be fruitful for understanding social norms, cultural codes, power relations, and identity construction processes at the time the text was written.
