Abstract

Abstract Objective:This study aims to explore primary school children’s perceptions of nursing through their drawings, both before and after a school health nursing intervention. By analyzing these drawings, the research investigates how children’s views shift following a structured health screening and education program conducted by nursing students. Methods:The study was conducted in a primary school in Central Anatolia with children aged 6–11. Data collection occurred in two stages: 1. Pre-intervention Drawings:A week before the intervention, children were asked to draw their perceptions of nursing. 2. Health Screening and Education: Nursing students performed health screenings (e.g., hygiene, vision, hearing, oral health) and provided education on topics such as handwashing, tooth brushing, bullying prevention, and substance abuse. 3. Post-intervention Drawings: One week later, children created new drawings reflecting their updated perceptions. The drawings were analyzed based on three key themes: nurses’ appearances, nurses’ actions, and their environments, using a "Nurse Perception Checklist" developed from existing visual analysis frameworks. Findings: - Nurses’ Appearances: Nurses were mostly drawn as female and in uniforms in both phases. Smiling faces increased from 70.9% pre-intervention to 90.4% post-intervention. - Nurses’ Actions: Initial drawings emphasized clinical tasks like administering injections. After the intervention, children depicted nurses engaging in educational activities, health screenings, and playful interactions. - Environments: Pre-intervention drawings predominantly placed nurses in hospitals (54.4%), while post-intervention drawings showed a significant increase in school-based depictions (27.0%). Conclusion: The intervention positively influenced children’s perceptions of nursing, broadening their understanding of nurses as educators and caregivers, beyond their clinical roles. This highlights the importance of school health programs in shaping children’s appreciation and awareness of the nursing profession, promoting a more holistic and positive image.
