Abstract

Birth self-efficacy refers to women's belief in their ability to manage the childbirth process, and this belief significantly influences the quality of the birth experience. This study aims to evaluate the effect of antenatal education on the birth self-efficacy levels of pregnant women. This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pre-test/post-test design without a control group. Participants were 60 primigravid women who voluntarily attended the Pregnancy School of a Training and Research Hospital in Istanbul between June 2024 and December 2024. The participants' mean age was 27 years (range: 18-41), and the mean gestational week was 24 (range: 17-36). Data were collected using a Personal Data Form and the Birth Self-Efficacy Inventory – Short Form (BSEI-SF), completed by participants before and after the antenatal education program. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test for variables that did not show normal distribution. All statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26.0. The participants' total BSEI-SF scores significantly increased from a pre-test mean of 212.3 ± 38.5 (SD) to a post-test mean of 240.1 ± 41.7 (p < 0.001). In the Outcome Expectancy (OE) subscale, the mean score rose from 123.6 ± 27.7 before education to 135.0 ± 18.7 after education (p < 0.010). Similarly, the Efficacy Expectancy (EE) subscale also showed a significant increase, from a pre-test mean of 88.7 ± 25.9 to a post-test mean of 105.2 ± 31.9 (p < 0.003). The findings indicate that pregnancy school education programs enhance childbirth self-efficacy, contributing positively to the childbirth process. These programs should be more widely implemented to improve maternal outcomes. Future studies are recommended to compare the effectiveness of different educational programs and to examine the long-term effects of such interventions.
