Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between lower-limb flexibility and explosive power, agility, and sprint performance in male football players aged 10–14 years. A total of 129 players participated in the study (Mean age = 12.5 ± 0.3 years; Height = 156 ± 7.6 cm; Body mass = 48.9 ± 10.2 kg; BMI = 20.0 ± 3.2). Flexibility was assessed using the sit-and-reach test, explosive power with the standing 30-m test, agility with the Pro-Agility (5–10–5) test, and sprint performance with 10-m and 30-m sprint tests. Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the relationships between flexibility and performance variables. The results revealed significant negative correlations between flexibility and agility (r = –0.215, p = 0.015) and between flexibility and 10-m sprint time (r = –0.198, p = 0.025), indicating that players with greater flexibility completed direction-change tasks more quickly and accelerated more effectively over short distances. However, the correlation between flexibility and 30-m sprint time was not statistically significant (r = –0.148, p = 0.112). Similarly, although the relationship between flexibility and explosive power (standing long jump) was positive, it did not reach statistical significance (r = 0.168, p = 0.056). The findings obtained in 10–14-year-old academy football players indicate that lower-extremity flexibility is significantly associated particularly with short-distance sprint speed and agility, but shows no clear association with 30-m sprint and explosive power performances.
