Abstract

The hypothesis of this study is that acute pomegranate juice consumption will positively affect the HRV parameters measured during the Cooper test compared to placebo. 14 healthy male volunteers participated in the study. The mean body mass index (BMI) of the participants was 22,03 ± 1,81 kg/m², which falls within the normal range according to the World Health Organization classification. The study was conducted using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design. Participants consumed pomegranate juice on one day and a placebo beverage on another day. Forty-five minutes after beverage consumption, the 12-minute Cooper test was performed. HRV measurements were recorded during exercise using a Polar H10 chest strap and analyzed with Kubios Scientific Lite software. Time-domain and frequency-domain HRV parameters were evaluated. No statistically significant differences were found between the placebo and pomegranate juice groups in terms of RR interval and heart rate (HR) at baseline and across all measurement time points from 1 to 6 (p > 0,05). In contrast, statistically significant differences were observed between the groups for the RMSSD parameter, an indicator of parasympathetic activity, both at baseline and throughout the exercise period (p < 0,05). These findings indicate that pomegranate juice consumption has no significant effect on RR interval and HR, but exerts a notable influence on autonomic nervous system response as reflected by RMSSD. The findings indicate that acute consumption of pomegranate juice does not have a significant effect on HRV parameters during exercise in healthy individuals compared with placebo. Further studies with longer intervention periods and different dosages are needed to clarify the potential effects of pomegranate juice on the autonomic nervous system.
