Abstract

Objective: The study aimed to determine the levels of compassion and burnout among 112 emergency healthcare workers and to analyse the relationship between compassion and burnout. Additionally, it was investigated whether the levels of compassion and burnout varied according to demographic characteristics. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study collected data from 148 emergency healthcare personnel through face-to-face and online surveys. A questionnaire form consisting of the Compassion Scale, Burnout Scale, and demographic characteristics was used. Data showing a normal distribution were analysed using the SPSS programme, applying frequency, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Cronbach's Alpha reliability analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis. A p<0.05 value was used for significance. Results: The majority of participants were female, aged 29-38, married, childless, and university graduates. Most worked as ATTs/Paramedics on a shift system, working 40-48 hours per week, and had 1-5 years of experience. The mean compassion score was 3.92 ± 0.57, and the mean burnout score was 2.64 ± 0.62. Significant differences were found between the mean burnout score and the mean age and occupation scores, as well as between the mean compassion score and gender, age, and occupation (p < 0.05). A moderate negative relationship (r = -0.470) and significant (p < 0.01) correlation were found between compassion level and burnout. It was determined that compassion dimensions other than kindness compassion affected burnout (R²: 0.365, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Emergency healthcare workers experience moderate levels of burnout and compassion fatigue, and factors such as age, gender, and occupation have significant effects on compassion fatigue and burnout. It is recommended that organisations monitor compassion fatigue and burnout levels, as well as the factors that contribute to them, and develop preventive strategies to mitigate their adverse effects on both work and social life.
