Abstract

Particularly in semi-arid regions of Turkey, development of the projects for water supply by using artificial recharge techniques for groundwater that increased the potantial, can be applied. One of them is subsurface dams. Narrow sections of the alluvial valleys in the secondary stream valleys are suitable for subsurface dams. Subsurface dams are smaller and simple, so cheaper compared to surface dams. For the construction of groundwater dams, that the reservoir, dam body and water intake structure is completely underground (subsurface dam), it is desirable that geological-hydrogeological conditions aresuitable. There are various alternatives depending on the depth of the water intake for the subsurface dams according to the dam type and the location of the water that risen to the ground surface. If the water intake is located close to the bottom of the dam body the maximum utilization will be achieved and the yield will increase due to the increase of hydraulic gradient. However, in order to attract water to the ground by gravity, a long transmission line should be constructed. As the water intake facility approaches the ground from the bottom, the transmission line and the excavation amount decrease. But the yield and active reservoir decreases. When the water intake facility reaches the ground surface, the system works like a spillway and no considerable excavation is required. However, in this case the yield decreases and the reservoir under the intake elevation remains as dead volume. As it is in the surface dams, after determining the most suitable location, natural material facilities, aquifer geometry and groundwater dynamics, topography, environmental conditions, cost analysis are done by making a comparative analysis, and the most suitable design and operation model are determined.
