Abstract

Migraine is recognized as a significant public health issue due to its high prevalence, recurrent course, and adverse effects on individuals' physical, psychological, and social functioning. Since migraine management largely relies on pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches implemented in the individual's daily life, self-care behaviors emerge as a key component of this process. The aim of this review is to examine self-care behaviors in individuals with migraine in line with the current literature and to highlight the role of public health nursing in migraine management. The review covers the clinical characteristics of migraine, the distinction between episodic and chronic migraine, modifiable risk factors, and self-care and nursing approaches in managing these factors. Literature findings indicate that lifestyle-based self-care behaviors such as sleep patterns, dietary habits, physical activity, stress management, and keeping a migraine diary are effective in reducing the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. These practices offer a holistic approach to migraine management within the framework of the SEEDS model (Sleep, Exercise, Eating, Diary, Stress). In the practical implementation of this approach, public health nurses play a key role in strengthening the self-care capabilities of individuals with migraine through education, counselling, monitoring and community-based interventions. In conclusion, migraine self-care should be considered a protective and empowering public health strategy that creates positive effects not only in terms of individual health outcomes but also at the health system and community levels.
