Abstract
Objective: The aim of the study is to determine the smartphone addiction status of students in a public high school and to examine the impact of this addiction on physical activity levels and musculoskeletal complaints. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 460 students aged 15-18 attending a high school in Ankara during the 2024-2025 academic year. Data collection was done through face-to-face surveys within the designated class hours. The data were collected using a data collection form prepared by the researchers through a literature review, the Short Form of the Smartphone Addiction Scale for Adolescents, the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form. The obtained data were analyzed using percentages, mean, standard deviation, chi-square, t-test, and logistic regression analysis. Results: It was observed that 51.8% of male students and 63.2% of female students were addicted to smartphones. While 91.5% of students addicted to smartphones are moderately active and 8.5% are active, these figures are 90.4% and 9.6%, respectively, for non-addicted students. When looking at musculoskeletal complaints among students, shoulder pain in the past 12 months and back pain in the last 7 days were reported more frequently among students who were dependent on smartphones. Conclusion: According to the research findings, ATB is quite high in the adolescent age group. ATB also increases physical activity and musculoskeletal complaints. ATB is becoming a problem that affects not only the individual but also society and public health.
