Abstract

Background: Trunk control is a crucial component for performing activities of daily living. Trunk control affects not only sitting and standing but also the ability to appropriately sequence more complex activities, such as regaining independent function in the upper and lower limbs. Aim: The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between trunk control and mobility and fine dexterity in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Gülhane Faculty of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation. Volunteer patients aged between 21 and 53 years, diagnosed with MS by a neurologist, with a disability level between 1 and 5, and who had not had an attack in the last 3 months were included in the study. Trunk control was assessed with the Trunk Impairment Scale, mobility with the Timed Up and Go Test and fine dexterity with the 9-hole Peg Test. Results: A total of 26 MS patients (mean age 39±10 years) were included in the study. The median disability level of the patients was 2 (1-5). A strong positive correlation was found between trunk control and mobility (rho=0.816, p<0.001). In addition, a strong positive correlation was found between fine dexterity of both right and left extremities, respectively (rho=0.732; rho=0.779, p<0.001). Conclusion: Trunk control was found to be associated with mobility and fine dexterity. Since distal stabilisation cannot be achieved without proximal stabilisation, trunk, upper and lower extremities may be considered and evaluated as a whole.
