Abstract

Background: Aerobic exercise plays a significant role in reducing problems caused by side effects during the treatment process in individuals with lung cancer. Aim: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise on fatigue, sleep quality, and kinesiophobia in lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Method: Our study included 70 individuals aged 18–65 who had been diagnosed with Stage II or III lung cancer and were currently undergoing active chemotherapy. Participants’ fatigue levels were assessed using the Cancer Fatigue Scale, sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and kinesiophobia using the Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale. Assessments were conducted before and after the 12-week program. Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups using a simple randomization method. The intervention group underwent a moderate-intensity aerobic exercise program under the supervision of a physical therapist, consisting of three 50-minute sessions per week for 12 weeks. The control group continued their routine medical treatments. An aerobic exercise program was offered to the control group following the second assessment. The significance level for all statistical analyses was set at 0.05. Results: Our study was completed with a total of 64 participants, comprising 27 individuals in the intervention group and 37 in the control group. The mean age of the participants was 59.28±5.65years, while the mean Body Mass Index was 25.64±5.35kg/m². In the intervention group, post-test measurements revealed a decrease in fatigue severity and kinesiophobia, as well as an increase in sleep quality (p 0.05). Conclusion: An aerobic exercise program improves sleep quality, reduces fatigue complaints, and alleviates kinesiophobia in lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. It is recommended that oncological rehabilitation be incorporated into treatment processes for lung cancer patients and that individualized aerobic exercise protocols be widely implemented.

Kontrol grubu rutin medikal tedavilerine devam etmiştir.
