Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the temporal distribution and basic epidemiological characteristics of occupational accidents reflected in the Social Security Institution (SSI) records in Turkey between 2015 and 2024. The research is a descriptive epidemiological study based on official statistics published by the SSI. Occupational accidents occurring in insured persons under Article 4/1-a of Law No. 5510 were examined in terms of age, gender, economic activity branch, type of injury, time of accident, workplace size, and length of employment with the last employer. Occupational accident frequency rates and fatality rates were calculated, and the relationship between age and the number of accidents was evaluated using Spearman correlation analysis. The occupational accident frequency rate is calculated based on the number of occupational accidents per 1,000,000 working hours in a year and per 100 insured full-time employees. In the ten-year period examined, a total of 4,639,932 work accidents occurred, resulting in 14,971 deaths. It was determined that the frequency of work accidents showed an increasing trend over the years. The 80.3% of the accidents occurred in men and 43.7% in the 14-29 age group. A strong negative correlation was found between age and the number of work accidents (p<0.001). The 57.0% of accidents (n=8,536) occurred in workplaces with fewer than 50 employees. Coal and lignite mining has been the sector with the highest rate of workplace accidents throughout all years. The study findings indicate that occupational accidents continue to be a significant public health problem in Turkey, particularly for young workers, small-scale workplaces, and high-risk sectors. Effective prevention strategies require strengthening sector-specific interventions, occupational health and safety training, and record-keeping and reporting systems.

5510 sayılı Kanunun 4/1-a maddesi kapsamındaki sigortalılarda meydana gelen iş kazaları; yaş, cinsiyet, ekonomik faaliyet kolu, yaralanma türü, kazanın gerçekleştiği zaman, işyeri büyüklüğü ve son işveren nezdindeki çalışma süresi değişkenleri açısından incelenmiştir.
