Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a metaverse-based educational prototype designed to enhance interaction and student engagement in distance learning environments. The study was conducted using a design-based research approach that integrates conceptual design, platform selection, technical infrastructure decisions, instructional scenarios, pilot implementation, and assessment processes. To ensure long-term sustainability, the Engage VR platform was selected based on criteria such as device compatibility, content richness, and support for both synchronous and asynchronous learning activities. The proposed prototype was designed as an integrated virtual classroom environment where instructors can utilize three-dimensional learning objects, videos, documents, and interactive whiteboards, while students participate through avatar-based interaction, collaborative activities, discussions, and asynchronous access to learning materials. A pilot implementation was conducted within an actual course setting, during which three-dimensional learning objects, virtual presentations, and real-time interactive activities were tested. The findings indicate that the virtual reality (VR) environment has the potential to enhance students’ engagement, concentration, and active participation in online learning processes compared to conventional online learning environments. However, issues related to technical sustainability, content development costs, and user experience should be carefully addressed to ensure effective implementation. The study contributes to the literature by presenting a practical metaverse-based educational model, a prototype architecture, and a preliminary evaluation framework for the implementation of metaverse-supported distance education.
