Abstract

Identifying the factors that contribute to the development of reading comprehension achievement is of great importance in supporting individuals’ life skills and academic success. Designed as a survey study, this research involved 592 fifth-grade middle school students in Ankara. The research data were collected through a reading comprehension achievement test consisting of open-ended items developed during the study based on the PIRLS cognitive taxonomy, an inventory of metacognitive awareness of reading strategies adapted to Turkish culture, and a student information questionnaire. In line with the purpose of the study, the predictive power of students’ metacognitive awareness of reading strategies, gender, daily time spent reading books other than textbooks, number of books they owned, daily internet usage time, and their mothers’ and fathers’ educational levels in predicting reading comprehension achievement was examined using hierarchical regression analysis. The findings showed that the strongest predictor was students’ level of metacognitive awareness of reading strategies. Gender (in favor of female students), one to two hours and three to four hours of daily reading, owning between 101 and 150 books, using the internet for less than one hour per day, and having a father with a university education or higher were also found to be significant predictors of reading comprehension achievement, whereas the categories related to mothers’ educational levels did not make a significant contribution. The model as a whole explained 57.4% of the variance in reading comprehension achievement. Keywords: Reading comprehension achievement, Reading strategies, Metacognitive awareness, Hierarchical regression, PIRLS
