Abstract
This research was conducted to determine midwifery students' knowledge and opinions regarding tandem breastfeeding. The descriptive study included a total of 76 midwifery students studying at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Kafkas University, during the spring semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. In this study, a survey form was used as a data collection tool. In the evaluation of the data, numerical percentage calculations and chi-square significance tests were used, and the statistical significance level was accepted as p<0.05. 51.3% of students stated that they knew about tandem breastfeeding, 14.5% said they had seen someone practicing tandem breastfeeding, and 93.4% said they had not seen any mothers practicing tandem breastfeeding in clinics. 5.3% of students stated that they received training on tandem breastfeeding and that they received this training from the university. A statistically significant difference was found between the desire to receive tandem breastfeeding training and the level of knowledge about tandem breastfeeding (p<0.05). A statistically significant relationship was found between students' knowledge about tandem breastfeeding and their decision to terminate tandem breastfeeding when there was insufficient milk for the newborn (p<0.05). It was found that participants were aware of tandem breastfeeding, but most had not seen anyone practicing it; all those who received tandem breastfeeding training had studied at university; they had sufficient knowledge and understanding of tandem breastfeeding; and they wanted to receive training on the subject. It is recommended that the effects of tandem breastfeeding on maternal and infant health be included in the midwifery undergraduate curriculum, and that students be made aware of tandem breastfeeding practices.
