Abstract

This study aimed to determine the levels of rape myth acceptance and the influencing factors among nursing students studying at two universities located in the eastern and western regions of Türkiye. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 412 nursing students between 1 March and 1 April 2024. Data were collected using an Introductory Information Form and the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale. Descriptive statistics (number, percentage, mean, and standard deviation), Spearman correlation analysis, Kruskal–Wallis test, and Mann–Whitney U test were used in the analysis of the data. Of the students, 5.8% in the western university and 14,8% in the eastern university reported encountering a rape case. More than half of the students stated that they did not know where to refer a rape victim (57.9% west; 55.3% east). No significant difference was found between the two universities in terms of mean scale scores (P>0.05). In both universities, male students had higher levels of rape myth acceptance than female students (P<0.05). Among students in the western university, those with income lower than expenses had significantly higher scores. A low-level negative correlation was found between age and scale scores among students in the western university (r=−0.190; P=0.037). Incorporating educational content on sexual violence, rape myths, and nursing approaches to survivors into nursing curricula may contribute to reducing rape myth acceptance. Additionally, qualitative studies focusing on factors influencing male students’ acceptance of rape myths are recommended.

Batıdaki üniversitedeki öğrencilerin %5,8’i, doğudaki öğrencilerin %14,8’i tecavüz vakası ile karşılaşmıştır.
