Abstract

Tissue regeneration is a complex biological process consisting of hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling phases. Factors such as oxidative stress, microbial infections, and uncontrolled inflammation can negatively affect tissue regeneration. In recent years, there has been increased interest in the therapeutic potential of naturally occurring bioactive compounds in tissue regeneration, with particular attention given to medicinal and aromatic plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Species such as Salvia officinalis, Thymus vulgaris, Origanum vulgare, Mentha piperita, Lavandula angustifolia, and Rosmarinus officinalis, belonging to this family, are considered rich biological resources in terms of phenolic acids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and essential oil components. The effects of plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family on tissue regeneration occur through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and regenerative mechanisms. It has been reported that bioactive compounds such as rosmarinic acid, thymol, carvacrol, menthol, and linalool suppress reactive oxygen species, reduce pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and exhibit inhibitory effects against various microbial pathogens. Furthermore, these compounds are said to accelerate tissue regeneration by supporting fibroblast proliferation, collagen synthesis, angiogenesis, and epithelialization processes. In addition, they are reported to have regulatory effects on cellular signaling pathways and growth factors. This review evaluates the biological effects of plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family on tissue regeneration in light of current literature data; their antioxidant capacity, inflammation modulation, antimicrobial activity, collagen biosynthesis, and mechanisms affecting tissue regeneration are examined. The data obtained indicate that the Lamiaceae family has significant therapeutic potential in terms of natural wound care products and biotechnological wound treatment applications.
