Abstract

Wound healing is a complex biological process consisting of inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling phases. Chronic wounds, diabetic ulcers, and infected wounds constitute a significant health problem today. In recent years, interest in the potential effects of natural products on wound healing has increased. Tamanu oil, a natural oil obtained from the kernels of the Calophyllum inophyllum tree, has been used in traditional medicine for many years. Thanks to its calophyllolide, inophyllum compounds, flavonoids, and fatty acids, it exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and tissue-regenerating properties. In this review, the effects of tamanu oil on wound healing, its mechanisms of action, experimental studies, and current clinical evidence are evaluated in light of the current literature. Current evidence suggests that tamanu oil may support the wound healing process through its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Its potential effects on fibroblast proliferation, collagen synthesis, and modulation of inflammatory responses are particularly noteworthy. However, most of the available evidence is derived from experimental studies, while clinical investigations in humans remain limited. Therefore, further well-designed clinical studies are required to confirm the efficacy and safety of tamanu oil in wound management.
