Abstract

Composite materials are widely used in engineering applications due to their low density and high mechanical strength. However, pores formed during the manufacturing process can lead to significant losses in mechanical performance. Therefore, investigating the effects of porosity on composite behavior is of great importance. Studies addressing these effects at the micromechanical level are limited in the literature and researching the performance of porous composites joined by bonding methods is a crucial necessity. For this reason, there are gaps in the literature, particularly regarding the effects of porosity in materials and the bonding performance of porous materials. To address these gaps in the literature, in the present study, the effects of the ratio and location of 5 µm diameter fixed pores in the matrix, composite material and bonded composite plate structures on mechanical behavior were investigated at the micromechanical level using the finite element method. The effect of porosity was evaluated in the matrix structure, the composite material and the bonded composite plate, respectively. Based on the mechanical properties obtained from the modeling studies, the effects of porosity on material performance were analyzed in detail. The findings showed that in structures with a 35% porosity rate, the material moduli decreased by an average of 50% and the pore location caused an additional decrease of approximately 5% in the material moduli. The effects of pore location and ratio are presented comprehensively in the literature with these data.
