Abstract

The poultry industry has become one of the most important livestock production sectors for meeting the increasing global demand for animal protein. However, the rapid expansion of the industry has also resulted in the generation of substantial amounts of waste, creating significant environmental sustainability challenges. Poultry manure, feathers, blood, offal, eggshells, and wastewater can lead to ammonia emissions, greenhouse gas release, soil and water contamination, and public health risks when improperly managed. This study was conducted as a comprehensive literature review by systematically evaluating recent scientific publications on poultry waste classification, environmental impacts, waste valorization technologies, and sustainable management practices. The collected information was comparatively analyzed to identify current utilization approaches, technological advancements, and future research needs. Recent biotechnological and environmentally friendly approaches demonstrate that poultry waste can be transformed into value-added products rather than simply disposed of. Composting, biogas production, enzymatic bioconversion, keratin recovery from feathers, and the production of protein hydrolysates from blood and offal are among the most promising valorization strategies supporting the circular economy. This review discusses the classification of poultry waste, its environmental impacts, current valorization methods, and future research perspectives, thereby providing a comprehensive framework for the development of sustainable poultry waste management strategies.
