Abstract

This study addresses the archaeological, archaeobotanical, and philological evidence recovered from Kaman-Kalehöyük, a mound site situated at the foothills of Baran Dağı and within a bend of the Kızılırmak River, in the province of Kırşehir. Systematic excavations at the site, first located in 1985 by the Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology and initiated in 1986, have revealed four principal cultural strata spanning from the Early Bronze Age (third millennium BCE) through the Iron Age, the Middle-Late Bronze Age, and finally the Beylik and Ottoman periods (14th-17th centuries CE). Within this broad chronological framework, the present study narrows its scope to two interconnected domains of Hittite-period material culture: grain storage practices, materialized primarily through the so-called ÉSAG structures (silo, grain-storage pits), and the early use and technological development of iron, as attested by knives, pins, rods, and other artifacts dated to the Early and Middle Bronze Ages. The scope further extends to the philological dimension of these practices, incorporating Hittite cuneiform sources ‒ legal texts, ritual texts, royal instructions, and annalistic records ‒ that illuminate the administrative, religious, and military significance of grain and iron within Hittite provincial and imperial structures. By combining these strands, the study situates Kaman-Kalehöyük within the wider network of Hittite provincial centers such as Alacahöyük and Sivas-Kuşaklı (Šarišša), where comparable storage installations have been documented.
