Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the health literacy levels of amateur and professional athletes. The sample for the study consisted of a total of 152 athletes, including 119 amateurs and 33 professionals from different sports disciplines in Turkey, who participated in the survey. A personal information form developed by the researchers was used to determine the demographic and sporting characteristics of the participants, while the Turkish Health Literacy Scale-32 (TSOY-32) was used to measure their health literacy levels. Health literacy values among athletes were examined in terms of gender and amateur-professional level; although some numerical differences were observed, no statistically significant differences were found. Male athletes' scores for understanding, evaluating, and using/applying information were higher in the treatment and service dimensions, while female athletes' scores for accessing information were higher. Some numerical differences were also observed between amateur and professional athletes in the treatment and service dimensions and in the disease prevention/health promotion dimension; however, these differences were not statistically significant. In conclusion, the findings of our study revealed that although there were numerical differences in health literacy scores among athletes according to gender and amateur-professional level variables, there was no statistically significant difference. This situation is similar to some studies in the literature.
