Abstract

This study examines para-taekwondo athletes’ experiences with the classification system and explores how the system is perceived in relation to fairness, competition, and governance processes. The study was conducted within an interpretivist qualitative research design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 active para-taekwondo athletes competing in the K41 and K44 kyorugi classes and the P20 poomsae class and were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Some participants perceived the classification system as supporting fair competition, whereas others associated height, limb length, age, impairment type, and competition between athletes from different classes with perceived inequalities. Classification experiences were also discussed in relation to motivation, self-confidence, and commitment to sport. Based on the themes generated from the interviews, the Para-Taekwondo Classification Experience Conceptual Framework (PTCECF) was proposed as a preliminary athlete-centred framework addressing the structural, experiential, and governance-related dimensions of classification. The study contributes to discussions on athlete experience, perceived fairness, and governance within para-sport classification systems.
