Abstract

Digital games play an increasingly significant role in individuals' daily lives, generating socio-cultural effects on users across age groups. However, their content is not always positive: digital games can shape individuals' value systems, moral perceptions, and behavioural patterns. Despite this, they have remained a relatively neglected field compared to other media, with limited systematic examination of their negative themes, making academic investigation necessary. This study aims to critically analyse the negative content of Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V), a popular digital game. The research was conducted with 22 fourth-grade students at a state primary school in the Güngören district of Istanbul. The study did not introduce children to the content; it worked with students already exposed to it. A basic qualitative research design was adopted, using a semi-structured interview form and a GTA V evaluation form for data collection. Data were analysed using content analysis. Findings revealed that violence, crime, gender discrimination, addictive tendencies, and unethical behaviour are prevalent in the game. While participants stated these behaviours are wrong in real life, they also noted that the game risks normalising unethical attitudes.

Özet

Dijital oyunlar, günümüz bireylerinin gündelik yaşamında giderek artan bir öneme sahip olup farklı yaş gruplarındaki kullanıcılar üzerinde belirgin sosyo-kültürel etkiler yaratmaktadır. Bununla birlikte, bu oyunların içerikleri her zaman olumlu özellikler taşımamaktadır. Dijital oyunlar bireylerin değer sistemlerinin, ahlaki algılarının ve davranış örüntülerinin biçimlenmesinde etkili bir rol oynayabilmektedir. Buna rağmen dijital oyunlar uzun yıllar boyunca diğer medya araçlarına kıyasla görece ihmal edilmiş bir alan olarak kalmış; içerdiği olumsuz temaların sistematik biçimde incelenmesi sınırlı olmuştur. Bu durum söz konusu oyunların akademik açıdan ele alınmasını gerekli kılmaktadır. Bu çalışma popüler dijital oyunlardan biri olan Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) ’in olumsuz içeriklerinin eleştirel bir bakış açısıyla analiz edilmesini amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma İstanbul’un Güngören ilçesinde yer alan bir devlet ilkokulunda öğrenim gören 4. sınıf 22 öğrenciyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada çocuklar oyun içeriğiyle tanıştırılmamış; yalnızca bu içeriğe daha önce maruz kalmış öğrencilerle çalışılmıştır. Çalışmada temel nitel araştırma deseni benimsenmiş; veri toplama sürecinde yarı yapılandırılmış öğrenci görüşme formu ile GTA V değerlendirme formu kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen nitel veriler, içerik analizi yöntemiyle sistematik biçimde çözümlenmiştir. Bulgular oyunda şiddet, suç, cinsiyet ayrımcılığı, bağımlılık eğilimleri ve etik dışı davranışların yoğun biçimde yer aldığını ortaya koymuştur. Katılımcılar bu davranışların gerçek yaşamda yanlış olduğunu belirtmekle birlikte oyunun etik olmayan tutumları normalleştirme riski taşıdığına da dikkat çekmişlerdir.
