Abstract
In this study, we have examined the meanings attributed to death by divine religions in the light of holy books and philosophers’ thoughts. In our study titled “Perception of Death and Tombstones in Divine Religions”, we have endeavoured to explain the concepts of death and the other world, starting from the philosophical definitions of death and beyond from the past to the present. The method followed for tombstones in this article is travel-observation. The rule of nature is that every living being is born, lives and dies. Death is the end of life. Birth and death are our entrance and exit to a two-door inn in the world. We have had bitter-sweet memories with our friends lying in the graves considered sacred shrines. The question of what happens after death has occupied the minds of people since antiquity. Therefore, the perception of death is becoming the focus of interest of many disciplines and its target audience is expanding. The perception of death in divine religions is a fundamental issue at the centre of many studies. The perspective on the perception of death of the followers of three major religions such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam, which constitute the vast majority of the world population, is extremely important. Taking into account the perspectives of the Torah, the Bible and the Holy Qur’an, which are the main sources of the three divine religions, the views on death are evaluated in depth. Our study is important in terms of comparing the perception of death in different religions. Divine religions have left deep impacts on human history and shaped cultures. One of the prominent elements among the rituals and symbols of these religions related to death is tombstones. We have attempted to reflect the meanings of the symbols used by seeing the tombstones in three divine religions on site. In our study, death has been discussed through the approach of the holy books in three different religions and the philosophers who left their mark. Although we have touched on different fields in our study, the theoretical focus is mainly on the field of theology. In the study, domestic and foreign sources have been scanned and the data obtained have been analysed by content analysis. We have tried to reveal the changes in the understanding of death in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the common and differentiating elements and how they are visible on tombstones. In this article, our purpose is to contribute to literature by examining the perspectives of divine religions on death and listing our findings in the conclusion section.
