Abstract

Changing education systems and curricula emphasize interdisciplinary approaches that require integrative learning processes. Understanding the metaphorical perceptions of pre-service science teachers towards the concept of STEM, which is a learning and development approach that integrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics, will help to understand their thought structures and expressions towards establishing interdisciplinary relationships. This study, which was designed to determine the metaphorical perceptions of pre-service science teachers about the concept of STEM, was conducted using a phenomenological design. The participants of the study consisted of 130 pre-service science teachers studying in the 3rd and 4th grades of two state universities. In the data collection tool used in the study, pre-service science teachers were asked to write their metaphorical perceptions about STEM and the reasons for these perceptions. In this direction, the following instruction was presented to the participants: "STEM is like .......................... Because ...................." . The data obtained were analyzed by content analysis technique. The analysis of the data showed that metaphors such as puzzle, computer, interdisciplinary approach and food metaphors were frequently used, while metaphors such as matryoshka, house, building, teacher were rarely used. In addition, the metaphors related to STEM were classified under 11 categories according to the reasons for their use: integrity, productivity, functionality, balance, diversity, guidance, innovation, effectiveness, breadth and depth, scientificity, usefulness. Because of the study, it was understood that the categorical features of the frequently expressed metaphors were related to the structural features of STEM, while the other metaphors were related to the functionality of STEM in the educational process.

Çalışma sonucunda, sıklıkla ifade edilen metaforların kategorik özelliklerinin STEM'in yapısal özellikleriyle, diğer metaforların ise STEM'in eğitim sürecindeki işlevselliğiyle ilgili olduğu anlaşılmıştır.
