Abstract

The aim of this research is to examine the effect of "Microplastic Pollution Awareness Education in the Context of Climate Change," supported by microscopic analyses, on the awareness levels of gifted high school students and to investigate the solution proposals developed by the students regarding this environmental issue at the end of the educational process. Employing a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design, the study measured the change in awareness levels of 40 students using the "Microplastic Pollution Awareness Scale," followed by two open-ended questions administered after the education. Prior to answering the open-ended questions, students were divided into groups of four and submitted their responses via Padlet following group discussions. Within the scope of the research, microplastics emitted from tumble dryers were analyzed through microscopic examinations, and the obtained data were shared with the students. During the educational process, topics such as the atmospheric transport of microplastics, their effects on glaciers, and their role in the carbon cycle were addressed within the context of climate change, supported by Web 2.0 tools. The research findings indicated a statistically significant increase in the students' general microplastic awareness levels following the education. Upon examining the sub-dimensions, it was observed that while awareness regarding living organisms and human health increased significantly, the increase in awareness regarding the prevention of pollution was not found to be statistically significant. Furthermore, it was determined that the increase in awareness among students who have a tumble dryer at home was significantly higher compared to those who do not. Regarding the qualitative dimension, it was determined that students predominantly presented individual and societal solution proposals, while touching less upon the global policy dimension. In conclusion, it was demonstrated that education concretized by microscopic observations was effective in increasing awareness; however, preventive strategies and a global perspective require greater emphasis within educational content.
