Abstract

Ancient Greek temples are remarkable not only for their architectural forms but also for their complex spatial organizations that shaped sacred experience. This study aims to examine the perceptual and symbolic dimensions of spatial organization and hierarchy in Ancient Greek temples. A qualitative methodology was employed through literature review, archaeological evidence, and spatial analysis of architectural plans. Focusing on Archaic and Classical temple typologies, the relationships among the pronaos, naos, opisthodomos, and peristasis were evaluated, while orientation, circulation patterns, thresholds, and visual axes were analyzed. The findings indicate the existence of a graded conception of sacredness extending from the exterior toward the interior. Restricted access to the naos, controlled lighting, and the central placement of the cult statue reinforced the privileged status of the sacred core. Furthermore, the peristasis and transitional spaces functioned as intermediary layers between the profane and the sacred, directing the visitor’s spatial experience. By integrating the disciplines of history and interior architecture, the study interprets Ancient Greek temples as spatial systems producing perceptual and symbolic meanings and offers an interdisciplinary perspective for the interpretation of cultural heritage.
