Abstract

Geographical discoveries are of immense importance in shaping the modern world. Understanding the importance of science and experimental observation in improving existing maritime technology allowed states with coastlines, such as Spain, Portugal, and England, to rise to significant positions in the 16th century by taking advantage of their geographical advantages. The work examined here, "The Age of Discovery 1400-1600" is highly valuable for understanding the process that led to these discoveries and the motivations of European states. It also helps in understanding why actors such as the Ottoman Empire and Italy did not actively participate in these discoveries. The work reveals that the wealth gained from overseas trade as a result of geographical discoveries helped build and finance more advanced empires in America and Asia. It also emphasizes that this wealth contributed to Western imperialism. While the work does not focus on the position of the Ottoman Empire, it provides necessary clues through its analyses and allows for comparison.
