Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine boxing coaches’ views on their planning practice as well as the behaviours and activities they use during training sessions. Eight male boxing coaches, aged between 27 and 55 years and with at least five years of active coaching experience, participated in the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain an understanding of the participants’ views regarding their preparation processes and their behaviours and practices during training. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim using the Voiser software. The interviews lasted an average of 29.58 ± 3.38 minutes. The interview data were analysed using the six-phase thematic analysis framework proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006). The analysis generated three overarching themes, each containing two, three or four subthemes, relating to the structure of training preparation, training practices, and coaching intervention. The findings demonstrated that the participants did not undertake systematic or detailed planning. Their reported practices and behaviours reflected a predominantly traditional coaching approach characterised by controlling, coach-centred and use of drill-based activities. Although the participants acknowledged the importance of theoretical knowledge, notable limitations were observed in their ability to articulate how such knowledge informed their practice. These findings suggest that coach development programme should place greater emphasis on advanced training-planning strategies, alternative pedagogical approaches such as game-based learning and the integration of relevant pedagogical theories into coaching practice.
