Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examines the chemical and aesthetic effects of fermented liquids on ceramic surfaces in the pit firing technique, one of the alternative firing methods in ceramic art. The main question of the research is "How do fermented liquids affect surface color and texture formations during the traditional pit firing process?" The aim of the study is to determine the potential contribution of fermented ingredients not previously reported in the literature (rice fermented liquid - sake, kefir, red grape fermented liquid - wine, barley fermented liquid - beer, and apple fermented liquid - vinegar) to ceramic surface aesthetics. The research was conducted using an experimental and observational method. The prepared forms were soaked in each fermented liquid for 48 hours. Afterward, one portion was wrapped in aluminum foil and the other portion was placed directly into the pit and fired. The color and texture changes that occur in the reduction atmosphere, along with the organic and inorganic additives used in this process, were examined. The findings demonstrate that sake creates smooth transitions and smoky effects on the surface, kefir's dense texture leaves deep traces, red wine creates diffused effects in color transitions, beer creates marble-like surface textures, and apple cider vinegar, with its acidic effect, provides distinct color and texture differences. The research's unique contribution is that it demonstrates that fermentation processes can produce natural, environmentally friendly, and aesthetically unique surface effects on ceramic surfaces. Consequently, fermented liquids can be considered alternative surface-forming materials in pit firing techniques, both chemically and artistically.
