Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the assessment questions in the 5th grade mathematics textbook published within the framework of the Turkey Century Education Model (TCEM) in the context of the Revised Bloom Taxonomy (RBT). The study also classified the learning outcomes in the curriculum according to the Revised Bloom Taxonomy and attempted to determine the level of cognitive alignment between the learning outcomes and the questions. In this study, conducted using the document analysis technique within qualitative research methods, 23 learning outcomes were examined using 103 end-of-theme assessment questions. The data obtained were analyzed using a descriptive analysis approach based on the cognitive process dimension and knowledge types of the RBT. The findings indicate that both the learning outcomes and the questions are predominantly concentrated at the Understand and Apply levels, while the Remember and Create levels are underrepresented. Furthermore, although examples from all levels of the RBT are included in the assessment questions, it was found that this diversity was not achieved in the learning outcomes. The results indicate that the emphasis on higher-order skills in the TCEM is open to improvement in terms of assessment tools. Accordingly, it is recommended that the assessment sections of 5th grade mathematics textbooks be developed in terms of cognitive integrity and enriched to support higher-order thinking skills.
