Abstract

This study aims to examine teachers’ levels of digital capital in relation to demographic variables such as age, educational level, branch, and duration of internet use. The study evaluates the digital capital approach through teachers’ digital problem-solving, digital content creation, and digital security skills. Designed within the framework of quantitative research methods, the study employed a correlational survey model. The sample consisted of 223 teachers working across Türkiye. Data were collected through an online questionnaire, and SPSS 26 software was used in the data analysis process. The Digital Capital Scale was used as the data collection instrument in the study, and the structural properties of the scale were examined within the teacher sample. As a result of the analyses, it was determined that the scale maintained its three-dimensional structure, and the total explained variance was calculated as 60.643%. The overall reliability coefficient of the scale was found to be α = 0.965. The findings indicate that age and gender variables produced significant differences in digital problem-solving skills. Teachers in younger age groups were found to have higher levels of problem-solving skills. In addition, male teachers were found to have higher digital problem-solving and digital security skills compared to female teachers. However, no significant gender-based difference was found in digital content creation skills. In terms of the branch variable, information technology teachers were found to have higher scores in digital problem-solving and digital security skills compared to teachers from other branches. However, due to the small sample size of the information technology teacher group, these findings should be interpreted with caution. The study found no significant effect of duration of internet use on digital skills. This result suggests that digital competencies are not determined solely by the amount of time spent online, but are also related to the quality of interaction established with digital tools. Overall, the findings of the study indicate that teachers’ levels of digital capital cannot be explained only by demographic variables; rather, their forms of interaction with digital tools, pedagogical use of technology, and digital education experiences also appear to be determining factors. In this regard, it is recommended that continuous and practice-based professional development programs aimed at improving teachers’ digital problem-solving, digital security, and digital content creation skills should be expanded.
