Abstract

Child sexual abuse is a widespread issue worldwide and poses a serious risk factor that threatens children's healthy development. A significant proportion of abuse cases are not reported to official authorities and do not appear in judicial processes. In this regard, court records serve as crucial data sources for understanding the general characteristics of abuse cases, the profiles of victims and perpetrators, and the legal proceedings. This study aims to identify the fundamental characteristics of child abuse cases by examining the case files of the Tekirdağ High Criminal Court from the year 1971. A document analysis design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. Approximately 300 case files were reviewed, and 19 judgment dossiers related to child abuse were identified and subjected to content analysis. According to the findings, the average age of abused children was 10.4 years. It was determined that the majority of victims had known their perpetrators prior to the incident. All defendants were male, with an average age of 20. The findings of this study indicate that child abuse has historically been a significant problem, but legal and social factors can directly affect the rate at which these cases are brought to court.
