Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the existence of convergence clubs in the 2000-2021 period of Industry 4.0 for emerging market economies. Using the Phillips-Sul (2007, 2009) club convergence test and the clustering algorithm, it investigates whether exports of medium and high technology products, the number of patents and Information Communication Technologies (ICT) exports converge or diverged to the same long-run equilibrium in emerging market economies. Club convergence analysis reveals that there are four convergence clubs and one divergent group clustering for medium and high technology product exports, six convergence clubs clustering for ICT exports and three convergence clubs and one divergent group clustering for the number of patents. As a result, it has been determined that Mexico and Thailand, Bulgaria and Hungary, Chile and Pakistan are in the same clubs in terms of Industry 4.0. The study also found that Peru diverged negatively from other countries while China diverged positively. Since the results of the analysis show that there is no single convergence club for emerging market economies, it is recommended that each country should develop an industrialization strategy in line with its own structural characteristics and industrial infrastructure.
