Abstract
This study examines the effect of the story map method, implemented within the Jigsaw technique, on seventh-grade students’ reading skills. A quasi-experimental design with pretest–posttest measures and experimental and control groups was used. The participants were 54 students (27 experimental, 27 control) enrolled in a secondary school in Şehitkâmil, Gaziantep, during the 2024–2025 academic year. The intervention lasted eight weeks with three class hours per week. The experimental group received instruction through the story map method integrated with the Jigsaw technique, while the control group was taught with traditional methods. Data were collected using the Reading Comprehension Test, Reading Attitude Scale, and Reader Self-Perception Scale and analyzed with SPSS 27. Parametric tests (paired samples t-test, independent samples t-test, ANOVA) were used when normality assumptions were met; nonparametric tests (Mann–Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed rank) were used otherwise. Cohen’s d was calculated for effect sizes. Results showed significant improvements in reading comprehension and reader self-perception in favor of the experimental group. Although overall reading attitude differences were not significant, a moderate effect was found for academic reading attitude. Findings suggest that the story map method, when applied through the Jigsaw technique, enhances comprehension and self-perception more effectively than traditional instruction and supports academic reading attitudes.
