Abstract

This study examines prayer bead (tespih) collecting within the context of postmodern consumer culture and explores how this practice transforms beyond the functional use of an object into a multilayered social experience that produces meaning, identity, and ethical values. The research is designed within a qualitative framework and adopts a phenomenological approach. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 11 participants who actively engage in prayer bead collecting, selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using descriptive and thematic analysis. The analytical process was structured around six main propositions developed along the axes of symbolic meaning production, identity construction, its relationship with traditional cultural values, its tension with postmodern consumption dynamics, its character as a slowness-based counter-practice, and the forms of ethical relations established with the object. The findings indicate that prayer bead collecting cannot be explained solely as a nostalgic act of preservation or as a market-centered consumption practice. Rather, it is positioned within a hybrid space where traditional craftsmanship and contemporary consumption forms intertwine. Within the fragmented experience of postmodern life, this practice generates a distinctive response to the individual’s search for meaning, continuity, and wholeness. By addressing prayer bead collecting through its symbolic, ethical, and existential dimensions within postmodern consumer culture, this study offers a critical and in-depth contribution to the literature on collecting.
