Abstract

Museums, which aim to preserve and exhibit traces of works, phenomena, and events of both material and immaterial nature that connect the past with the present, can become public spaces where ideological frameworks are constructed and circulated by states or political power elements through discursive practices and curatorial techniques. This study examines how museums function in the construction of national identity and collective memory, which discursive and representational practices are employed in this process, and how visitors are guided in line with these constructs, enabling museums to assume functions of legitimacy and propaganda. In this regard, the exhibition “Cyprus ’74 Never Forget,” hosted by the National Historical Museum of Athens, was selected as a case study, and the representational strategies of the 1974 Cyprus Operation were analysed using Michel Foucault’s discourse analysis approach. The findings demonstrate that national museums are not merely spaces that convey historical information objectively, but rather present history through selected, organised, and reconstructed narratives. Accordingly, the study concludes that museums operate as public spaces that present historical knowledge from an ideological perspective, legitimising state- or politically power-centred narratives while simultaneously serving a propaganda function.

Bu doğrultuda, Atina Ulusal Tarih Müzesi ev sahipliğinde düzenlenen “Cyprus ’74 Never Forget” sergisi örneklem alınarak, 1974 Kıbrıs Harekatı’nın temsil stratejileri Michel Foucault’nun söylem analizi yaklaşımı temel alınarak analiz edilmiştir.
