Abstract

This research was a descriptive study which was planned to determine those symptoms that emerge due to chemotheraphy treatment and their effects on the quality of life. Total 103 patients who were treated in out- patient chemotheraphy unit of the Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital between the dates of 1 January- 29 August 2003 were enrolled in research. As data collection tools; a survey form, Rotterdam Symptom Checlist RSC and WHOQOL BREF-27 quality of life scale WBOLS were used. Data were evaluated through t test, oneway variance analysis and Tuckey post hoc test. When the socio-demographic characteristics of 103 patients who participated in the research were studied it was discovered that 54.4% were women and 74.8% were married. Of these patients 31.1% were 60 years of age or older, 27.2% were in 40-49 age group, mean age of patients was found as 50.02 ± 14.60.When the education levels of patients were studied it was observed that 28.2% of them were elemantary school graduates. Mean length of treatment of the patients included in the scope of research was 19.67±25.11 months, 36.9% received 6 or more cures. It was also detected that 34% of the patients had breast, 18.5 % had hematological malignancy diseases and 51.5 % of them were primarily and 24.3%were secondarily focused. During course of the treatment “a little” anorexia in 39.8 % of the patients and “a little” anger in 45.6% of them were observed. A weak and negative relationship was found between patients’ overall quality of life and physical r=-.2292 and psychological r=-.2379 symptoms that they encountered throughout the course of treatment. In order to reduce the adverse affects of both physical and psychological symptoms that patients experienced associated with treatment, on the quality of life, a nurse should evaluate and document the symptoms that cancer patients experienced due to treatment, should plan, implement and assess the results of the nursing attempts appropriate to each individual within the symptom management and should provide training to the patient and the family
