Abstract
The escalating geopolitical tensions in the global economy in recent years have become a determining factor directly affecting countries’ foreign trade performance. The direction of trade flows, foreign investment decisions, and macroeconomic stability are largely shaped by political uncertainties and the trajectory of risk perception. In this context, due to both its strategic location and its high dependence on foreign trade, the economy of Türkiye exhibits a highly sensitive structure toward the effects of geopolitical risks on macroeconomic indicators. In this study, the short- and long-term effects of the global geopolitical risk index (JRE), imports (LIM), and foreign direct investments (LFDI) on exports (LEX) in Türkiye were analyzed using the ARDL bounds testing approach, utilizing quarterly data for the 2013Q1–2025Q1 period. The primary objective of this study is to empirically demonstrate the impact of geopolitical risks on exports, particularly across the short and long terms. According to the empirical findings, while geopolitical risk exerts a significant and negative impact on exports in the long term, the system is observed to recover rapidly from external shocks. Furthermore, the results indicate that both foreign direct investments and imports stimulate export performance in both the short and long term, with imports serving as the input channel that most strongly supports exports in the long term.
