Abstract
The ilmihal tradition, which encompasses the fundamental principles of Islamic faith, forms of worship, moral values, daily practices, and information concerning the life of the Prophet Muhammad, began to develop around the 10th century. Because the general public found it difficult to comprehend the scholarly works on the basic Islamic sciences, there arose a need for texts that conveyed religious knowledge in a clear, comprehensible, and easily memorizable manner. This need led to the emergence and subsequent popularization of the ilmihal genre. Rooted in oral culture, ilmihals occupy a distinctive position within religious literature due to their practical orientation toward the everyday needs of the people and their didactic style. In the Ottoman context, the ilmihal tradition began in the 15th century with translations from Arabic into Turkish and later expanded with original works composed by local authors. The aim of this study is to introduce Kitāb al Erkān al Dīn, a ilmihal text that has not yet been the subject of any scholarly research, and to contribute to the understanding of the Ottoman tradition of versified ilmihals. This short masnavi, consisting of 122 couplets, was written by a poet who used the pen name Hakīm. By consulting contemporary sources, the study attempts to identify the author, who provides some autobiographical information in the text itself. Accordingly, it appears that the poet’s name was Muḥammad b. Yūsuf, who first received training in medicine and later turned to the study of religious sciences. The only known manuscript of the work is preserved in the National Library of Ankara under the shelf mark 06 Mil Yz Fb 32. In this study, the question of whether the manuscript -dated 907 Jumādā al Ākhir (1501/1502) and registered as the author’s copy- is indeed the author’s own version has been examined. Furthermore, through document analysis, the verses addressing key subjects such as faith, the obligatory and recommended aspects of ablution and ghusl, as well as the main acts of worship-prayer, giving (zakāt), fasting (ṣawm), pilgrimage (ḥajj), and minor pilgrimage (ʿumrah)-have been analyzed and interpreted. Finally, in the appendix, the text has been transcribed into Latin script and translated into modern Turkish. As a result, the identity of a previously obscure author has been determined, his work has been examined in detail and introduced into the scholarly literature, and a further contribution has been made to the study of the Ottoman tradition of versified ilmihals.
Özet
İslâmiyete dair inanç esasları, ibadetler, ahlâki ilkeler, günlük yaşam pratikleri ve Hz. Peygamber’in hayatına dair bilgileri içeren ilmihâl geleneği, 10. yüzyıldan itibaren gelişmeye başlamıştır.
