Abstract

This study examines the core dimensions emphasized in the literature regarding the participation of artificial intelligence (AI) in foreign language teaching processes. Within the scope of the study, 25 academic works published between 2023 and 2025 were analyzed using bibliometric and thematic analysis methods. In line with the literature review, thematic dimensions such as AI's impact on the development of specific language skills, self-confidence and anxiety processes within the context of social and affective student experiences, the updating of educational roles and teacher-oriented studies, as well as ethical limitations and social deficiencies were identified. The review explores the pedagogical functions of AI-based systems, specifically in speaking and writing practices, and the role of virtual systems in student motivation. Furthermore, key trends such as the potential of digital tools to alleviate teacher workload and the transformation of traditional teaching roles are investigated. However; social and ethical limitations such as academic integrity and plagiarism, data privacy, AI's lack of human and cultural context, hallucinations, algorithmic bias, technology addiction, and digital inequality remain prominent areas of debate in the literature. In this context, the study discusses existing gaps in the field and offers educational recommendations for future research by comprehensively revealing the general trends of these technologies' participation in foreign language education and focusing on these identified thematic dimensions. Keywords: artificial intelligence, foreign language education, language education, language learning
