Abstract

In this study, during the highway construction works in Aktaş Village of Siirt Province, the construction works of which are carried out by the 9th Regional Directorate of Highways, the stability problems occurring in the embankment section were analyzed by limit balance and finite element methods, and the safety numbers and collapse surfaces were determined. High cut and fill sections are encountered in the study area, therefore this section is of critical importance. In the light of field investigations, laboratory and literature data, the necessary shear strength parameters for analyzes were obtained. In stability problems, it is difficult to determine the location and shape of the sliding surface. On the model reflecting the current situation, collapse surfaces were tried to be detected and safety analysis calculations were made with Plaxis 2D V20, which is based on the finite element method, and Slide V6.0, which is based on the limit equilibrium method. Although the two methods seem compatible in terms of safety numbers, the safety numbers obtained with the finite element method are lower. In addition, it has been determined that the finite element method gives more positive and reliable results in terms of determining the locations of failure zones in the soil and obtaining stress deformation curves.
