Abstract

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) polymer is widely recognized as a material with extensive applications in industrial fields. A review of the literature indicates that while the high impact strength of unreinforced polymer matrix materials appears to be an advantage, their low rigidity (elastic modulus) at room temperature presents a disadvantage. In this study, the mechanical behaviors of neat polyvinyl chloride, short glass fiber-reinforced, and carbon fiber-reinforced polyvinyl chloride samples were systematically investigated in accordance with standards. The samples were processed into test plates by mixing polymer granules with fiber reinforcements using the hot-press technique, and tensile specimens were obtained via a laser CNC machine. In the calculation of the elastic modulus (rigidity coefficient) of the samples tested until fracture on a tensile testing machine, it was confirmed that compared to the initial elastic modulus of the neat matrix, this value increased with carbon fiber reinforcement and reached its highest level with glass fiber reinforcement. The experimental results demonstrate that fiber reinforcements impart a more rigid structure to the matrix, yet lead to limitations in ductility and energy-damping capacities. While neat polyvinyl chloride exhibits the highest potential in damping sudden impact shocks with its high elongation at break and maximum tensile strength, these values decreased in the reinforced samples. Consequently, while the use of glass and carbon fiber-reinforced materials with high rigidity offers a suitable engineering solution in areas requiring high dimensional stability and resistance to linear bending—such as pipelines, sewage networks, and structural construction profiles—the neat polyvinyl chloride matrix structure provides a primary advantage when high ductility and impact load damping are targeted.
