Abstract

In recent years, efforts to identify and reduce the carbon footprint of the industrial sector have gained great importance in preventing global climate change. Although the forest products industry is based on sustainable raw material utilization, certain levels of greenhouse gas emissions occur throughout the production processes. In this study, the environmental impacts of production processes in a sawmill operating in Türkiye were evaluated and the carbon footprint was calculated. Within the scope of the study, the stages from raw material supply to the final product are analyzed and emission amounts are determined. IPCC Tier 1 method was used to calculate the carbon footprint and the environmental impacts of energy consumption, logistics activities and waste management were analyzed. The findings of the study reveal the stages that cause carbon emissions in production processes and provide recommendations for sustainable production practices. The carbon footprint values of the product groups produced were calculated as 51.89 kgCO2e/m3-product for profiled timber and 23.79 kgCO2e/m3-product for construction timber. Raw material transportation (75.38%), electricity consumption (11%) and burning of wood-based residues (7.02%) are among the largest contributors to the facility's total carbon footprint. The results obtained highlight the importance of efficient logistics management, renewable energy use and waste recycling strategies for reducing carbon footprint in wood material processing industries.
