Abstract

Background and Aims Rapid changes in land cover and complex topographic conditions influence the surface energy balance, leading to regional temperature differences. Understanding the topographic factors and vegetation indicators that affect the spatial distribution of Land Surface Temperature (LST) is essential for climate-sensitive planning and environmental management. This study examines the effects of elevation, slope, and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) on seasonal LST in Zonguldak, Bartın, and Kastamonu. Methods Data for elevation, slope, NDVI, and LST were used in the study. All variables were normalized to a 0–1 range to improve comparability. Seasonal relationships between these variables were evaluated using correlation analysis separately for the summer and winter periods. Results The results show a strong negative correlation between NDVI and LST during the summer (r = -0.79). In contrast, this relationship was very weak in winter (r = -0.01), likely due to low photosynthetic activity and the effects of snow or vegetation cover. Elevation had a moderate negative effect on LST in summer (r = -0.38), while this effect became much stronger in winter (r = -0.79). The slope variable showed a low-to-moderate correlation in both seasons. Overall, topography is the second most important factor after NDVI in summer, while elevation is the main determinant in winter. Conclusion The study demonstrates that the region's topographic diversity plays a significant role in seasonal temperature distribution. Specifically, vegetation density is a key regulator of the thermal regime during the summer months. By quantifying the contributions of topography and vegetation to seasonal heat dynamics, this study provides a scientific basis for climate-adaptive regional planning and landscape management.
