Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the impact of seafarers' emotional intelligence levels on their psychological well-being and the mediating role of burnout in this effect. The research model and hypotheses were developed within the context of flow theory. The study population consisted of maritime employees in Türkiye. For this purpose, research data were obtained by responding to a survey conducted by 435 seafarers selected using a simple random sampling method from among seafarers working on ships in the port of Zonguldak. The study results indicated that seafarers' emotional intelligence levels significantly and positively impacted their psychological well-being, while significantly and negatively impacting their feelings of burnout. Conversely, seafarers' burnout significantly and negatively impacted their psychological well-being. In addition, it was determined that feelings of burnout had a mediating role in the relationship between seafarers' emotional intelligence levels and their psychological well-being. These findings indicate that emotional intelligence enhances seafarers’ psychological well-being partly by reducing burnout, highlighting burnout as an important mechanism underlying this relationship.
